Using re-submission codes (HCFA 1500 claim form: Box 22)
Using re-submission codes (HCFA 1500 claim form: Box 22)
This article will walk you through the process of editing a claim to show a specific re-submission code in Box 22 before refiling.
The default setting for Box 22 on the HCFA 1500 form is "1-Original." There are times that a Payer will request that refiled claims show a specific re-submission code and sometimes a reference number that they provide you with.
Common Re-Submission Codes Include:
- 6-Corrected
- 7-Replacement
- 8-Void
Please note: The only time a re-submission code of 6, 7 or 8 should be submitted on refiled claims is when the Payer has specifically requested it. If they have not requested this, a refiled claims should be left as the default of '1-Original'.
Payers have been known to reject claims due to a re-submission code appearing in Box 22 when it was not specifically requested. If you are uncertain as to whether or not you should include a re-submission code in Box 22, we recommend contacting the Payer directly and inquiring about their specific requirements.
